What’s in a name?

I sat around watching Lion King with my daughter the other day. It was before I discovered they were coming out with a 3D version, otherwise I would’ve waited. Dang that, by the way. Now it will be all fresh in my memory – although I feel the added dimension will only help to tug at my heart strings even further. Admit it guys, The Lion King made you cry. It’s okay, we’ve all been there. In fact, TLK represents one of only a few selection of movies where I wasn’t rooting for the bad guy. I mean, okay, I was actually, until the stampede left Mufasa lying on the ground and Simba walked in timidly saying “Dad” and lifting Mufasa’s lifeless paw… okay, I can’t go on, it’s too hard. And it’s off topic anyway. Continue reading

The Annual Summer Fanboy Geekfest

Summer’s almost here. And in Dubai, it means a little more than what it does in the rest of the world. Summer is not a time to step out into the sun, take a walk in the park, have barbecues, or any other such outdoor activity. This blazing inferno of a city is good for one thing, and one thing only in the summer – staying indoors. Not necessarily home, but indoors. Like air-conditioned areas. Get out of your air-conditioned homes, groan about the heat during your 12 second walk to the car, get in, blast the a/c off on the coolest, drive to your indoor destination (mall/pub/lounge/restaurant/ski-resort – yes, ski-resort), meet your friends and discuss the Dubai summers. Continue reading

A city full of manginas

So I’m sitting in the pantry at the office, as I so usually do on the morning of the first day of the week. I’m having a turkey ham sandwich, and a strong, black mug of coffee. Somewhere deep inside, I am having this manly sandwich (white bread, not wholemeal or in a baguette!) and this strong morning beverage because I’m a little upset about the events of last night. I went out with the missus. For – okay don’t judge me here – wine and fondue. It tastes good, alright. And who says you can’t enjoy the finer things every now and then. And so what if I went to the wine and cheese bar after spending a few hours at a day spa, getting my back rubbed and my cuticles cleaned. I still don’t consider myself a douche. And I’ll tell you why. Continue reading

2012: Be Prepared

A few months ago, I made the slightly over-confident statement that the Mayans got the year wrong when saying the world is ending in 2011, rather than 2012. I did back it up with good reason, and, to tell you the truth, I still don’t see how the world (except for poverty-stricken villages with no access to cinema) will survive the VD overdose. But, for a second, let’s consider that I am being a little partial, and that the end of the world countdown will reach its climax on 22 December 2012, I would say we need to be prepared. Emotionally and habitually. Here are a few suggestions on preparations. Continue reading

Bapu!

It would be impossible for me, a Pakistani, to write a critical piece on Gandhi and not emotionally provoke the Indian reader. However, I shall attempt to do this as politely as possible and hope for the best. Please be advised that I am neither an anti-Indian nor an anti-Hindu individual. This piece is not meant to offend any one. Please read through the entire text before passing any hateful comments.

“Oh God,” said Gandhi, right after he was shot by Nathuram Vinayak Godse, as he fell to the ground and died. Relatively unknown TV actor Ben Kingsley’s portrayal of the Mahatma made its way into the hearts of millions around the world in 1982′s multiple Oscar-winning Gandhi. In truth, the actual words he uttered right before he died were “Hai Ram”, but since that translates to “Oh one-quarter-avatar-of-the-seventh-reincarnation-of-the-Lord-Vishnu”, the word “God” was used for simplicity. Continue reading
